These mines (or more correctly, underground stone quarries) are believed to date back to mediaeval times or even earlier. They were once of great importance, providing large quantities of building stone for many buildings in the South East.
The landowner has denied access. Any person found on site will be prosecuted by the land agents. For further information contact the Wealden Cave and Mine Society using the contact page WCM Contact Page and selecting "Access Request" in the drop down list.
Bats use this site. The grid reference has been removed at the request of the WCMS.
